The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17)
In the scientific world mankind has never figured out what keeps atoms from flying apart, but mankind has most definitely figured out how to make atoms fly apart. This scientific breakthrough resulted in one of the world’s most deadliest weapons…Oppenheimer’s atom bomb. It’s human nature to attempt to “reverse engineer” God’s creations. We see this nature unfold at a faster rate every day now. Artificial intelligence, smashing subatomic particles together at near the speed of light, elaborate and intricate 2D universes that are moving into the 3D arena a.k.a video games that keep getting more “real” by the second. What did Satan tell Eve in the garden? Let me think for a minute. That’s right, he told her… “your eyes will be open and you will be like God.”
Our desire to continually further the advancement of the human race in terms of being “like God” is a direct result of “the fall” and Satan cannot create anything. Instead he takes God’s creation and perverts it. The scientific world even agrees with this concept that nothing is created and calls it the first law of thermodynamics. Einstein himself stated that mankind creates nothing. Instead we only “unlock” mysteries of the universe. Though acknowledging an “intelligent design” to the universe to uncover a definite “creator”, ultimately Einstein succumbed to this “desire” as well by acknowledging that his life’s ambition was to understand the mind of God. Can I propose that this “desire” will never lead to a good place? There’s no doubt the world is full of chaos in realms seen and unseen.
There is a reason why God engineered us to only see a certain amount of the spectrum of actuality that takes place all around us every second of the day. If we were able to witness every little thing that is happening right now in this very moment on the quantum and atomic level we would surely not be able to handle what we were seeing. Yet there is sublime order. A stunning and beautiful “intelligent design” to the world and to the universe, that according to the word of God, is obvious.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psalm 19:1)
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. (Romans 1:19-20)
What is chaos and disorder? It’s something you and I deal with every single day in some way. Some moments are small and some moments seem like a lifetime. There’s one product of disorder that I struggle with constantly day in and day out and that’s stress. The way I react to stress typically comes in the form of a band aid called “control”. I try and control my surroundings in the objects around me, situations, and sometimes people. The more disorder and chaos I feel, the more tighter I pull on the reins of control. All of us who struggle with control are simply reacting to the disorder and chaos we feel. So in my tiny mind I feel that if I can control the world around me then I can bring order to the chaos.
However, as I’ve grown and changed in my relationship with Christ I’ve come to slowly relinquish the need to control and let Him take the reins. I’ve discovered the more I attempt to control the more “controlling” I need to do and it never ends. The more I give in, the more it becomes a vicious cycle. It will continue like clockwork day in and day out, and it’s exhausting. I often think about how my Lord will allow me to feel a “false sense of control” if I continue to walk in my own ways. As a result, something or a situation will take place that forces me to notice that it’s a “correction”. It’s Jesus extending His hand to me and asking me to move towards Him and take it.
God tells us over and over again that He’s a God of order and a God of justice, but often times He will allow chaos in our lives, and we mustn’t brush it off and assume it’s exclusively the work of the Deceiver. Instead we should listen and meditate on what God is trying to say to us. Nonetheless, there are times when God must dispatch evil in order to bring…order
I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the LORD, do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7)
God promises Judah that He will “create calamity” to conquer Babylon namely in the form of Cyrus, the Medo-Persian king. Before Cyrus and the Babylonian captivity however, Judah was “walking in their ways” for a very long period of time. “Controlling” their own lives. Over and over again God would reach out to them through the prophets and warn them to turn back to Him. Eventually The Word tells us that “God’s anger was aroused” and He dispatched evil to correct Judah’s course.
Then say to them, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy above them. (Jeremiah 43:10)
In numerous examples we see God’s incredible order and justice through the “lens” of our own eyes, but we also in numerous occasions see examples of God’s order and justice through the lens of God’s eyes which in many ways more than one will appear to be “chaos and disorder” to us. The trick is to identify that you’re in the midst of chaos and disorder for a reason and on many occasions you are not a victim of the world around you, but a victim of your own flesh. Once we can understand and admit our own weakness and powerlessness it’s only then we can truly understand the power of our Lord. I can’t be a Christian. Nor can I do Christianity. Only Jesus can. The disciples once asked Jesus what must one do to be the greatest?
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:1-4)
